Eversource, along with representatives from BXP, community partners and state and local officials, today broke ground on construction of the Greater Cambridge Energy Program (GCEP), a first-of-its-kind transmission initiative to address the increased electric demand in the region, enhance the resiliency of the transmission system, and ensure a flexible grid to reliably serve customers while supporting electrification and decarbonization goals. The innovative project will also enable the interconnection of more new clean energy resources to support additional electric supply and increase the grid’s capacity as electrification continues to grow and more customers adopt clean technologies like EVs and heat pumps in the coming years.

Eversource today announced the energization of the Sudbury to Hudson Transmission Reliability Project, which marks the completion of Eversource and National Grid’s Greater Boston and New Hampshire Solution to strengthen the resiliency of the region’s electric transmission system against extreme weather and improve reliability for customers. Sudbury to Hudson in eastern Massachusetts was the final project completed in a suite of 50 projects included in the broader regional suite of projects, which ISO New England selected as a preferred solution to enhance regional electric reliability, increase the capacity of the system and provide more grid flexibility during emergency events. Other major projects in the solution included the Merrimack Valley Reliability Project, Woburn to Wakefield, and Mystic to Woburn.

With a focus on helping to enable Massachusetts’ unprecedented clean energy transition while ensuring safe, reliable service for customers across New England, Eversource has acquired a 26-acre portion of the Mystic property from Constellation Energy. Eversource has not developed specific plans for the site at this time, but its strategic location, historic use, and existing infrastructure uniquely position it as a potential multi-use energy interconnection hub for large-scale renewable energy sources – including onshore or offshore wind, hydro, battery storage and nuclear among others – with the capacity to support electrification and meet the reliability needs for major energy users in the region. Over the coming year, Eversource will collaborate closely with Massachusetts and Everett officials and other stakeholders to develop a plan for the property, which is adjacent to the site of the proposed soccer stadium in Everett, to improve electric reliability in New England while also helping to advance Massachusetts’ electrification and decarbonization goals.

In recognition of its local collaboration, commitment to modernizing the electric system and support of clean energy goals, Eversource and its local partner BXP have been selected to receive a 2024 Cambridge Chamber of Commerce Annual Visionary Award for their partnership on the innovative Greater Cambridge Energy Program (GCEP), which includes the development of a first-of-its-kind underground electrical substation. The Visionary Awards & Gala took place on November 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Eversource (NYSEES) has been awarded the “New York Project of the Year” from the Engineering News-Record (ENR) for its leading efforts building the onshore infrastructure for the South Fork Wind project, the first commercial scale offshore wind project in the United States.

Affirming the commonwealth’s leadership on a strategic approach to the clean energy transition, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities' (DPU) recently approved Electric Sector Modernization Plans (ESMP) proposed by Eversource and other utilities to develop the clean energy infrastructure needed to meet decarbonization goals while ensuring safe, reliable service for customers. The DPU’s order builds on Massachusetts’ proactive, equity-focused work to advance a sustainable energy future, reflecting a strong commitment to responsibly investing in more resilient, flexible infrastructure to combat the impacts of climate change, enable electrification, increase renewable energy production and meet the future energy needs of customers.

Affirming its leadership in pursuing innovative decarbonization solutions, Eversource has been recognized with the Environmental Business Council of New England's (EBC) Inaugural Community Choice Award for the energy company’s innovative first-of-its-kind networked geothermal pilot project in Framingham, Massachusetts. The award was presented to Eversource leadership and members of the project team during the EBC APEX Awards Celebration held at the City Winery in Boston on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

Following the recent re-bid of the Sunrise Wind offshore wind farm by joint venture partners Eversource and Ørsted, New York has selected the project in its latest solicitation, New York 4, to deliver substantial economic benefits and advance climate goals.

In its fifth consecutive appearance, Eversource is ranked as the #3 utility and #38 overall on the list, which honors companies that address the business issues that matter most to Americans, including providing worker benefits and work-life balance, protecting customer privacy, and minimizing pollution.

In recognition for its leadership in environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives, Eversource is the #1 utility in 3BL’s annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking for 2023, which evaluates transparency and performance in ESG among the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies. This is the third time in the last five years that the energy company has been included in the rankings, and in addition to being Eversource’s first time as the top utility, it was the only utility on this year’s list.

As part of its ongoing commitment to advance an all-encompassing approach to help facilitate the decarbonization of its natural gas system, Eversource started drilling this week on approximately 90 bore holes that are an essential component of its networked geothermal pilot program in Framingham, Massachusetts. Once completed, the energy company’s geothermal “loop” will connect 140 customers across nearly 40 buildings – including residential homes, a cabinet store, fire station, Framingham Housing Authority buildings and the community college – to provide an energy efficient and sustainable heating and cooling system regulated by the earth’s natural temperature.

In recognition of its continued commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) in the workplace, Eversource now ranks as the top utility in both of As You Sow’s most recent scorecards tracking the 1,000 largest publicly traded companies’ steps to increase transparency and accountability on the path to justice. As the top utility in both the racial justice and workplace equity scorecards, Eversource ranks 5th and 17th across all sectors on each scorecard respectively, resulting in the energy company’s recognition by As You Sow as a “Top 10” company overall. Together, the scorecards demonstrate Eversource’s leadership in transparently advancing workplace DE&I programs and initiatives consistent with the energy company’s public statements on racial and social justice.

Affirming its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, Eversource is once again included in the annual Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI), which this year recognizes 484 companies from around the world that have demonstrated their commitment to advancing women's equality in the workplace and promoting transparency in gender reporting. This is the fourth time Eversource has been included in the index.

As world leaders gather for the COP27 Climate Summit in Egypt this week to tackle the global challenge of climate change, Eversource is making a commitment to adopt aggressive measures that support deep, cross-sector carbon reductions through a science-based target. In support of its wide range of ongoing efforts to do its part in addressing climate change, the energy company will establish this target based on the most current climate science and recommendations for limiting global warming in collaboration with the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), a partnership of prominent environmental NGOs, to greatly reduce its carbon emissions.
