This month, nurses across the nation are celebrated for the incredible work they do year-round. May is National Nurses Month. National Nurses Week was recognized last week, and Intermountain Health is proudly celebrating its extraordinary nurses and the indispensable role they play in the health and well-being of patients across the Intermountain West with the theme: Nursing – a Work of Heart.

“This year, we proudly celebrate Nurses Week with the theme: “Nursing — a work of heart.” These words speak to the kindness, dedication, and heart Intermountain nurses bring to their work every day,” said Amy Christensen, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer for Intermountain Health’s Canyons Region, which includes Utah and Idaho. “We celebrate our nurses’ empathetic care and contributions that truly make a difference to our patients, communities, and to each other.

Intermountain employs nearly 18,000 nurses across its system in six states.

From providing compassionate bedside care to leading groundbreaking research and driving innovation, nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, and their dedication is particularly evident within the Intermountain Health system.

“This year, we’re also celebrating a special milestone, Intermountain Health’s 50th anniversary,” said Angie Scartezina, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer for Intermountain Children’s Health. “Over the past five decades, Intermountain nurses have consistently delivered outstanding care to patients and helped improve the health of our communities.”

At Intermountain Health, nurses are integral to every aspect of patient care.

They are the frontline caregivers, offering comfort and support during vulnerable times. They are skilled clinicians, administering treatments, monitoring patient progress, and making critical decisions. They are also educators, empowering patients, and their families, with the knowledge they need to manage their health.

In today’s healthcare environment, nursing is a cornerstone of patient care and healthcare delivery. They truly are the heart of healthcare.

Beyond direct patient care, Intermountain Health nurses are actively involved in quality improvement initiatives, ensuring the highest standards of safety and effectiveness.

Their leadership is evident in shaping healthcare policies and advocating for the needs of patients and the nursing profession.

They participate in research studies that advance medical knowledge and develop innovative approaches to patient care. Nurses help drive innovation in healthcare. They are on the frontlines where they identify innovative ideas for improvements.

Intermountain Health is committed to supporting its nurses through professional development opportunities, fostering a collaborative work environment, and recognizing their invaluable contributions.

This month – as part of National Nurses Week and Nurse Appreciation Month – Intermountain Health encourages the community to join in expressing gratitude for the dedicated nurses who make a profound difference in the lives of so many.

Nursing is a career that offers great flexibility in many ways

Not only does a career in nursing provide many ways to make a difference, but one of the benefits of a nursing career at Intermountain is the flexibility that it offers.

Nurses can choose from a variety of work settings, schedules, and roles to suit their preferences and career goals. They can work in various settings such as hospitals, clinics, schools, and community centers, allowing them to explore diverse specialties and find the niche that best aligns with their passions and skills.

This flexibility extends to scheduling options as well, with opportunities for part-time, full-time, and even PRN or “as needed” roles and travel nursing roles. This flexibility allows them to balance their work with other areas of their lives, such as family responsibilities, education, or personal pursuits.

The flexibility of a nursing career also includes opportunities for nurses to easily transition between different roles and settings throughout their careers, with learning and professional growth. They can pursue different paths for professional development and advancement, depending on their interests and aspirations.

Intermountain offers many opportunities for nurses from new grad to nursing leadership

At Intermountain, there are exciting opportunities to support both new nurse graduates, frontline nurses who have more experience, and nursing leaders in their careers.

Intermountain Health has several programs that provide tuition reimbursement for caregivers who want to pursue a career in nursing to become registered nurses or earn their bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing.

Intermountain supports nurses in their career growth.

Last year, Intermountain launched a new program for frontline nurses, called iAspire.

This new program enables nurses who want to continue working at the bedside and enhance their clinical skills to participate in this professional development program that rewards them for expanding and sharing their knowledge, experience, and clinical expertise.

As part of the program, following the successful completion of the activities within the program, nurses earn a pay differential. This program was designed by nurses for nurses who would like to continue working at the bedside, and it provides an opportunity for continued growth and recognition.

By offering these opportunities, Intermountain supports nurses in their career growth and satisfaction, while also ensuring high-quality patient care and outcomes for patients.
