Mailtrap’s Inbound Email enables development and product teams to receive, parse, and process incoming messages without deploying a mail server or configuring DNS records.
-- Mailtrap announced the launch of Inbound Email on June 2, 2026. The new feature allows backend developers, infrastructure engineers, and product teams to receive email programmatically via a hosted inbox and a clean REST API, extending Mailtrap's platform from email sending to a full sending-and-receiving infrastructure.
Building inbound email workflows can involve configuring receiving infrastructure, parsing incoming messages, managing attachments, and connecting email events to application logic. This setup adds development time before teams can start building the workflows themselves.
With Mailtrap Inbound Email, developers can create a hosted inbox via the API. It doesn’t require MX records or DNS configuration, and is ready to receive email immediately after creation. Mailtrap uses a signed webhook notification to deliver parsed incoming messages as structured JSON. For teams that prefer to poll on their own schedule, Mailtrap offers the Messages API. Attachments are ready for download via secure, signed URLs and can be streamed directly to S3, databases, CRMs, or processing pipelines. Webhook delivery is signed, and failed deliveries are retried automatically with exponential backoff over 24 hours.
Teams can also test inbound workflows end-to-end in Mailtrap's Sandbox environment, verifying auto-replies, ticket creation, and routing logic behave correctly before anything reaches a real inbox.
In practice, the feature serves a wide range of workflows:
- Engineering and DevOps teams can convert monitoring emails into GitHub issues, PagerDuty incidents, Slack alerts, or tickets.
- Product and SaaS teams can receive support emails via webhook and automatically create or update tickets in the CRM.
- E-commerce teams can extract documents, invoices, and other attachments to trigger accounting or document workflows.
At the same time, Inbound Email connects to tools developers already use. Teams can trigger automation platforms such as n8n, Make, and Zapier when they receive incoming email. It is also accessible through the Mailtrap MCP Server and native integrations with AI coding tools, including Claude Code and Cursor. Further information is available at mailtrap.io/inbound-email.
Inbound Email is currently available as an API-based product. A user interface and support for custom receiving domains are planned for a future release.
