Per ContrastConnect’s guide, imaging center startups require an investment of $1.5 to $3 million USD, which encompasses the cost of imaging equipment, facility construction, licensing, and working capital. Equipment will be the bulk of the initial cost, with new 1.5T MRI systems costing an average of $1.25 million and 3T systems costing between $1.6 and $2.2 million. MRI suites also require specialized coils, workstations for imaging processing, and modifications to flooring, ventilation, and emergency quench systems to accommodate the machinery, and these will come with their own costs.
CT scanners and X-ray, ultrasound, and mammography equipment, although cheaper than an MRI suite, must also be factored into overall costs. ContrastConnect’s guide says that imaging groups can save money by purchasing refurbished equipment instead of new equipment; when making their decision on which option to pick, imaging groups are advised to consider clinical needs, anticipated volume, service area demographics, and capital constraints.
Additionally, imaging centers require staff, and administrators must factor salaries into startup costs. Radiologists are core to imaging facilities and have annual salaries that range from $300,000 to $500,000. However, ContrastConnect’s resource notes that some imaging facilities may choose not to staff full-time radiologists to reduce costs; instead, they can contract third-party radiology groups when there is a need for imaging services.
Medical directors and technologists also require consideration, as these personnel must work on-site in facilities during procedures.
Beyond investment costs, ContrastConnect’s guide says that imaging groups should expect to wait 4 to 6 months for the licensing process to complete, though states that require a Certificate of Need may need an additional 6 to 12 months for approval. For Medicare reimbursement eligibility, facilities must receive accreditation from recognized organizations such as the American College of Radiology (ACR) in a process that involves a stringent evaluation of facility equipment, personnel qualifications, image quality, and safety protocols.
