Marquis Who's Who Recognizes Byron Haynes Jr. for Expertise in Engineering and Higher Education

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / December 10, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who recognizes Byron Haynes Jr. for his expertise in engineering and higher education. With 45 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Mr. Haynes is a leading expert in the petroleum field.

About Mr. Haynes

Mr. Haynes currently works at his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin, as an associate professor of practice, holding this role since 2024. Before beginning his career, he earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree at this institution, both in petroleum engineering. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge from his 45 years in the oil and gas industry, including significant roles at Shell Global, North Caspian Operating Co. N.V. and Occidental Petroleum Corp.

Furthering his professional expertise, Mr. Haynes has gained several certifications. He is a certified professional engineer in Alaska and Texas and an active program evaluator at the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Inc (ABET).

Deeply influenced by his father, a "wildcatter," who took risks in oil drilling, Mr. Haynes' upbringing naturally led him to pursue petroleum engineering. Throughout his career, he has held leadership positions, such as principal reservoir engineer at Shell Global, lead reservoir engineer at North Caspian Operating Co. N.V. in Kazakhstan and chief reservoir engineer at Shell Global in Kuwait. However, his influence extends beyond corporate roles, including his long involvement with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), where he has served as an associate editor and technical editor for the Journal of Petroleum Technology. He has also taught sessions on technical paper writing at SPE's yearly fall conference.

Preparing the Next Generation of Engineers

Mr. Haynes considers his most significant career achievement to be his work with professional societies, and he is proud of the numerous awards and accolades he has received from SPE. He also believes that teaching younger engineers how to communicate and present effectively is important.

In his current position at the University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Haynes focuses on just that: preparing the next generation of petroleum engineers. Over the next three to five years, he plans to teach young engineers important communication skills and strategies for finding jobs in the oil and gas industry. He also plans to share his practical expertise through coursework and help bridge any gaps where current professors may lack recent industry experience. His advice to students is to be flexible in their career paths, to think about what they want and to take control by owning their professional choices. He is fully aware of the growing impact of AI and data analysis in the industry. He recognizes its benefits, but he also cautions against engineers relying on it too heavily rather than on critical thinking.

Reflecting on his career, Mr. Haynes credits his success to the strong support of his family, including his wife and daughters. When he has the chance, he appreciates a game of golf in his free time. He is well-known for mentoring younger engineers, offering technical guidance and career advice, and is deeply thankful for the many opportunities that have come his way.
