Marquis Who's Who Honors Steven J. Barker, MD, for Education Expertise

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / November 20, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Steven J. Barker, PhD, MD, for his expertise in the field of education. With more than five decades of professional experience, Dr. Barker is honored as a professor emeritus of anesthesiology and aerospace engineering at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Today, he remains dedicated to educating the next generation of medical professionals and engineers.

Building a Multidisciplinary Foundation

Dr. Barker's professional experience is supported by a robust education. He began his academic career by earning a bachelor's degree in physics at Harvey Mudd College in 1967, followed by a master's degree in engineering science and a doctorate in engineering at the California Institute of Technology in 1969 and 1972, respectively.

Later in his career, Dr. Barker decided to shift from engineering to medicine. To accomplish this, he pursued a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine, completing the program in 1981. He then finished an internship in general surgery and a residency in anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego, becoming chief resident in 1984.

Dr. Barker considers his commitment to self-improvement a driving factor in his success. This dedication has enabled him to join the separate fields of engineering and medicine, leading him to excel in patient monitoring and understanding patients under anesthesia. In many ways, Dr. Barker's work in anesthesia may be seen as the culmination of his dual career paths.

A Vast and Varied Professional Career

Over the course of his professional career, Dr. Barker has served in research positions, professorial roles and chair positions across engineering and medicine. Today, he operates as a professor emeritus of anesthesiology and aerospace engineering. In this role, he is responsible for delivering key lectures, maintaining industrial connections and keeping his medical license current.

Ongoing Contributions to Patient Safety

To this end, Dr. Barker remains active in three patient safety societies. He is on the board of directors and serves as chief safety officer for the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Additionally, he works with the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research to encourage collaboration between the two.

Recently, Dr. Barker has been part of improvements in the monitoring of oxygenation parameters in unconscious, conscious and critically ill patients. In the last 20 years, he has recognized that the field has come a long way. Today, medical professionals can monitor blood oxygen saturation and brain activity to assess the depth of anesthesia, avoiding outcomes that are too deep or too light.

Plans for the Future

Even as he enters his senior years, Dr. Barker is dedicated to doing what he loves. He is passionate about teaching and finds fulfillment in seminar and lecture work. As an expert in his field, his contributions are valuable to students and professionals and his notable multidisciplinary training enables him to offer unique insights.
